Noon Kiwanis announce scholarship recipients

The Hermiston Kiwanis Noon Club announced that six Hermiston High School students have been selected to each receive $1,000 scholarships.

The Perry Johnson Post-Secondary Education Scholarships have been awarded to Frederick Gonzalez, Kellie Zepeda and Wyatt Paschal.

Gonzalez plans to study business and/or graphics design. Zepeda plans to attend the University of Portland, where she’ll work towards a degree in physical therapy with the ultimate goal of getting a doctorate in the field. Paschal will pursue a degree in agricultural education at Washington State University.

Recipients of the Russell Dorran Memorial Scholarships are Jahayra Garcia, Vanessa Ambriz and Matthew Rada.

Garcia plans to major in finance at the University of Portland. Ambriz will study international relations at Whitman College. Rada will major is atmospheric sciences at Oregon State University with the goal of a master’s degree in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma.

The scholarship applicants were evaluated on their academic achievements, financial need, and leadership and service activities within their school and community.

The scholarships are given in memory of a pair of past Kiwanis members. Johnson also was a Baptist minister, who supported youth services and education. Dorran was a charter member of the club, as well as the Hermiston Elks Lodge, Hermiston Development Corporation and Blue Mountain Community College board.
