Ione alumni awarded McElligott scholarships

Six Ione High School alumni have been named recipients of the 2016-17 Maryan L. McElligott Memorial Scholarship. Charlette Burghard, a junior at Eastern Oregon University, and Charissa Newman, a senior at Oregon Health & Science University, will each receive a $1,500 scholarship. Scholarships for $1,000 were awarded to Timothy Patton, a sophomore at Southwestern Oregon Community College; Jorge Aguilar, a freshman at Central Oregon Community College; Rachel Holland, a freshman at Regis University in Colorado; and Jason Juarez, a freshman at Oregon Institute of Technology.

The Maryan L. McElligott Memorial Scholarship fund has awarded scholarships to Ione High School alumni each year since 1997. The scholarship is open to all college undergraduates, with a preference given to students in their sophomore year or above. The fund was established in memory of Mrs. McElligott, who passed away in 1993 after a battle with cancer.

The Maryan L. McElligott Memorial Scholarship fund makes annual awards to graduates of Ione High School who are enrolled or will be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at any accredited post-secondary institution, including out-of-state institutions. Applicants, including McElligott scholarship recipients, may reapply each year as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. All Ione Community Charter School graduates are encouraged to apply.

BATON ROUGE, La. — John Abreu of Pendleton and Gary Walter of Milton-Freewater were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Both are students at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.

Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Altrusa of Pendleton awards $10,000 in scholarships

PENDLETON — Ten scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded in June to Pendleton High School graduates by Altrusa of Pendleton.

Shelby Greb was awarded the BMCC Mary Bates Scholarship, endowed by Bates’ family to honor the former BMCC head librarian. Recipients must delcare a major in early childhood education or librarianship. Greb will attend BMCC for one year to finish general education classes, then transfer to a four-year school to pursue a career as a kindergarten teacher.

Other scholarships recipients were:

James Bradt, who will attend the University of Portland next year to prepare for a doctorate program in optometry; Clancy Deutz, who plans to study nursing and eventually specialize in oncology at Gonzaga University; Ryan Lacey, who will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with the goal of becoming an aerospace engineer; Roman Martinez, who intends to study criminal justice at Eastern Washington University; Lauren Roberts, who will attend Oregon State University with a long-term goal of becoming a pediatric nurse; McKenzie Sherman, who will work toward an AAOT degree at BMCC before transferring to a four-year school to study veterinary medicine; Taryn Sokoloski, who plans to major in public relations and business at Oregon State University; Stephanie Struthers, who will pursue a nursing degree at Linfield College; and Adrie Traum, who will attend BMCC with a long-term goal of becoming a lawyer.

PENDLETON — P.E.O. Chapter BJ recently awarded scholarships to Pendleton students.

Shyla R. Davison of Pendleton is the 2016 recipient of the $2,500 Gladys and Harry Masenhimer Memorial Scholarship for use at Blue Mountain Community College during the upcoming school year. Davison, a 2015 graduate of Pendleton High School, will be a sophomore at BMCC this fall, working towards completion of her Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree. She hopes to eventually earn a bachelor’s degree in earth science, with a focus on paleontology.

Members of the Masenhimer family fund this award annually as a memorial to their parents, Gladys and Dr. Harry Masenhimer, who were longtime Pendleton residents. Oregon State P.E.O. Chapter BJ selects recipients for this honor from among outstanding local women who are pursuing advanced degrees.

And Lexie Lorraine Campbell of Pilot Rock has received a $2,000 scholarship from the chapter for use at Blue Mountain Community College during the 2016-2017 school year. Campbell will begin her fourth year of study at BMCC this fall and will graduate next spring as a registered nurse, with her associate’s degree in nursing. She plans to work in the region, while pursuing her bachelor’s degree through OHSU’s on-line nursing program.

Chapter BJ awards this scholarship annually to exceptional women like Campbell, who are nearing completion of degrees from BMCC.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for women around the world. P.E.O. has more than 240,000 members in the United States and Canada.

Hermiston RDO employee awarded scholarship

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — William Johnson of Pasco, Wash., has been selected as a recipient of Equipment Dealers Association’s Equipment Dealers Foundation (EDF) Scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year. Johnson’s total scholarship of $2,000 includes matching funds from his sponsoring equipment dealership, RDO Equipment Company in Hermiston. He will be attending Walla Walla Community College.

Scholarship funds totaling $36,000 were awarded to qualified students/trainees who were sponsored and recommended by equipment dealerships throughout the United States and Canada.

EDF’s objective is to support the education, training or advancement of current and potential employees in the equipment industry in hopes of creating a larger pool of skilled, committed, long-term employees for dealerships. Scholarships are available in each of EDA’s nine regions.


Zitterkopf qualifies for Provost’s Honor Roll

SPOKANE — Scott Zitterkopf of Milton-Freewater has been named to the Whitworth University Provost’s Honor Roll for spring semester 2016.

Zitterkopf qualified for the academic honor society by maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.75 during the semester.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

SALT LAKE CITY — Adele Corey of Pendleton has received her Master of Education in Learning and

Technology degree from Western Governors University (WGU). The university held its 31st semi-annual commencement ceremony in Salt Lake City on July 16 and celebrated the graduation of more than 8,000 graduates.

At its commencement, the university awarded 4,944 undergraduate and 3,103 graduate degrees in business, information technology, K-12 teacher education and healthcare professions, including nursing.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University has released its summer President’s Honor Roll. To be eligible for the honor roll, undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of nine graded hours in a single term at WSU and earn a grade point average of 3.75 or earn a 3.50 cumulative GPA based on 15 cumulative hours of graded work.

Local students included on the list were Adrienne Cole of Irrigon and Selene Torres-Medrano of Umatilla.
