Pendleton grads earn Alison Furnish scholarships

PENDLETON — The Alison Furnish Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded $1,000 scholarships to five Pendleton High School students. The scholarship began in 1991 in memory of Alison Furnish by her mother, Jesse Forshaw Furnish.

Students earning scholarships:

Mason Davis, son of Jeff Davis and Holly Harrison. He will attend Blue Mountain Community College, majoring in mathematics and computer science.

Keziah Hampton, daughter of William Hampton and Felicity Hampton. She will attend Washington State University-Tri Cities, where she will major in engineering.

Tony Papol, son of Vincent Papol and Donna Harrington-Papol. He will major in physical and mathematics at Brown University.

Emily Bradley, daughter of Brian and Deirdre Bradley. She will attend Oregon State University and plans to major in bioengineering.

Kaylie Thompson, daughter of John and Jennifer Thompson. She will study nursing at Eastern Oregon University.


Beckwith graduates with honors

BEND — Will Beckwith, a Pendleton native, was recently awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in energy systems engineering at Oregon State University-Cascades in Bend, Ore. Beckwith graduated No. 1 in his engineering program with honors and earned a 3.51 GPA. He will be attending Oregon State University in Corvallis in the fall of 2015 in the Master of Science program in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in the thermal-fluid sciences.

In its 14th commencement, Oregon State University Cascades set a record for most graduates ever at their campus in Bend with 316 bachelor’s and master’s degrees awarded. The annual commencement offers an opportunity to recognize the graduates for their creativity, leadership, and excellence. The achievement of the students is supported by individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the Central Oregon community.

PHS grad earns Laurie Malcom scholarship

PENDLETON — Trinity Whitaker, recently graduated from Pendleton High School, is the recipient of a $2,600 Laurie Malcom Memorial Scholarship to study food science at Oregon State University. The scholarship is named for Laurie Malcom, who was killed in 1978 in an auto accident a few weeks after graduating from PHS. The grant is made annually by the Malcom family.

Whitaker, daughter of Joe and Diana Whitaker, Pendleton, also received other scholarships, including one in food science from OSU.

Farm Bureau gives local scholarships

PENDLETON — The Umatilla-Morrow County Farm Bureau recently awarded scholarships totaling $2,750 to seven 2015 high school graduates.

Terrel Platt of Pilot Rock (Pendleton High School) was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. The son of Steve and Melinda Platt, Terrel will attend Colorado State University, majoring in animal science and agribusiness.

A $500 scholarship was awarded to Makenzi Hughes of Heppner High School. Makenzi is the daughter of Kevin and Angie Hughes of Heppner. She plans to study agriculture education at Blue Mountain Community College.

Five local graduates earned $250 scholarships:

Macy Gibbs of Heppner, daughter of Jay and Susan Gibbs, will attend Oregon State University to study agriculture business. Briana Wolfe, Hermiston, plans to attend OSU and major in biohealth sciences. She is the daughter of Bradley Wolfe and Robbie Edison of Hermiston.

Elizabeth McCarty, daughter of Dan and Brandy McCarty of Echo, will study nursing at Eastern Oregon University.

Dakata Moss of Stanfield plans to attend Columbia Basin College to study engineering technology. She is the daughter of Darrell and Dannielle Moss of Stanfield.

Bailey Weinke of Pilot Rock is the daughter of Michael and Nancy Weinke. She will attend EOU and plans for a career in occupational therapy.

Hancock receives Stuvland scholarship

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Linebackers Club recently awarded the Alex Stuvland scholarship to T.J. Hancock, a 2015 Pendleton High School graduate. The $4,000 scholarship is given to the Buckaroo senior football player who most exemplifies the high academic and athletic standards set by former Pendleton Linebacker president and former Buckaroo football player Alex Stuvland. This player must show leadership, respect to his fellow players, hard work, discipline, teamwork, a desire to win and a love of the game.

Hancock graduated with a 3.55 GPA. He was selected as a second team all conference wide receiver for the Buckaroos. Hancock will attend Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., where he will play football for the Wildcats.

McBee graduates from Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Patrick McBee of Pendleton has graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of

Science degree in biology and economics from the University’s Robert J. Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences.

Commencement was held on May 18 in Alumni Stadium on the Boston College campus in Chestnut Hill, Mass. There were more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate degree recipients in the Boston College Class of 2015.

Irrigon native earns degree, honor roll

BISMARCK, N.D. — Dustin Osborne of Irrigon graduated from Bismarck State College with an AAS in power plant technology during the college’s 75th commencement ceremony on May 15, 2015.

Osborne also was named to the President’s Honor Roll for the Spring 2015 semester. Students must maintain at least a 3.50 grade point on a 4.00 scale while enrolled in at least 12 semester hours of classes to qualify.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jacob Scott Moore of Pendleton was recently named to Charleston Southern University’s spring 2015 Dean’s List. Dean’s List students at CSU have earned a 3.5 GPA or better and earned 12 credit hours or more for the semester.

MCMINNVILLE — Jennifer Carey of Pendleton received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing during commencement exercises Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Linfield College. A total of 747 candidates for degrees were presented.

EOU presents student awards

LA GRANDE — From musicians to mathematicians, educators to economists, artists to athletes, Eastern Oregon University presented a total of 39 awards to undergraduate and graduate students at its annual awards assembly June 12.

Three Hermiston students earned academic awards during the assembly. Mary Hawman was recognized for her excellence in business administration and accounting. Anthony Eisenbarth received recognition for his work in economics. And Brian Eisenbarth was honored for his philosophy work.

Northwest Farm Credit Services awards minority scholarship

SPOKANE — Northwest Farm Credit Services recently awarded an Oregon Minority Scholarship Award to Karen Montes of Hermiston. The Northwest FCS Minority scholarship supports academic achievement and the advancement of diversity by awarding $2,000 scholarships to students pursuing degrees in agriculture/finance/business in the Northwest.

Montes is the daughter of Maria Del Carmen and Miguel Montes of Hermiston. She is studying business at Oregon State University. She is currently a publishing officer for Messo American Student Association. Following graduation Montes plans to pursue a management position with a corporation.

Northwest FCS is a customer-owned financial cooperative providing financing and related services to agricultural, forestry and fisheries business owners in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Phi Kappa Phi inducts local students

BATON ROUGE, La. — Two local residents recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines: Marty Botts of Athena was initiated at Portland State University, and Brian Eisenbarth of Hermiston was initiated at Eastern Oregon University.

They are among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society.

Whitworth names spring laureates

SPOKANE — Whitworth University recently named local students to its Laureate Society. The studentqualified for the academic honor society by maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.75 during the semester.

Honored were Rebecca Jepsen of Heppner; Allison Rude and Nolan West of Hermiston; and Hannah Hale of Pendleton.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
