Ione students receive McElligot scholarships

IONE — Five Ione High School graduates have been named recipients of the 2015-16 Maryan L. McElligott Memorial Scholarship: Charlette Burghard, a sophomore at Eastern Oregon University; Emily Holland, a sophomore at Carroll College in Montana; Stephen Holland, a senior at Linfield College in Oregon; JoAnna Patton, a senior at Eastern Oregon University; and Tashina Rushlow, a junior at Eastern Oregon University. Each will each receive a $1,500 scholarship for the upcoming school year.

The Maryan L. McElligott Memorial Scholarship fund has awarded scholarships to Ione High School alumni each year since 1997. The scholarship is open to all college undergraduates, with a preference given to students in their sophomore year or above. The fund was established in memory of Mrs. McElligott, who passed away in 1993 after a battle with cancer.

The Maryan L. McElligott Memorial Scholarship fund makes annual awards to graduates of Ione High School who are enrolled or will be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at any accredited post-secondary institution, including out-of-state institutions. Applicants, including McElligott scholarship recipients, may reapply each year as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. Applications are available through the Oregon Student Access Commission at http://www.oregonstudentaid.gov/.

PEO BJ awards Masenhimer scholarships

PENDLETON — Lexie Lorraine Campbell of Pilot Rock is the recipient of the Gladys and Harry Masenhimer Memorial Scholarship for 2015. She was awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the Masenhimers’ sons, Brent, Mark and Blair Masenhimer, for use during the 2015-2016 academic year. Campbell has been accepted into the nursing program at Blue Mountain Community College and begins her studies this fall. She is the daughter of Ryan and Christy Campbell.

The Gladys and Harry Masenhimer Memorial Scholarship is given annually, and Oregon State P.E.O. Chapter BJ selects recipients for this honor from among outstanding women who are pursuing advanced degrees.

An additional $1,200 scholarship given by the members of Chapter BJ itself — also in honor of the Masenhimers — has been awarded this year to Sierra Carey, who will be a senior biology major at Linfield College in McMinnville this fall. Sierra is the daughter of Jennifer Carey.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for women around the world. P.E.O. has more than 240,000 members in the United States and Canada.

Heppner grad named to ASU dean’s list

Ryan Rochelle Dougherty, daughter of Cliff and Dawna Dougherty of Heppner and a Heppner High School 2014 graduate, has been named to Arizona State University Dean’s List with a 4.0 gpa.

Ryan is attending Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions Speech and Hearing Science program with a major as a speech and language pathologist.

Olivera named to University of the Sciences dean’s list

PHILADELPHIA — Evangelina Olivera of Pendleton has been named to the spring 2015 Dean’s List at University of the Sciences. Selection for this award is based on completing and passing all assigned courses with no grade below a “C” and attaining an academic average of at least 3.4 for courses taken in the spring of 2015.

Olivera is a pharmaceutical sciences student.

University of the Sciences has prepared students to be leaders and practitioners in the healthcare and science fields for nearly 200 years.

Located in Spokane, Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Villegas named to dean’s list

FOREST GROVE — Sara Villegas of Hermiston was among 378 undergraduate students at Pacific University named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2015 semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must achieve a term grade-point average 3.70 (4.00 scale) and complete 12 or more graded hours.

Founded in 1849, Pacific University is a diverse and sustainable community dedicated to discovery and excellence in teaching, scholarship and practice. The university consists of colleges of Arts & Sciences, Optometry, Education, Health Professions and Business, with campuses in Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Eugene and Woodburn.

Knights of Columbus scholarship winners announced

HERMISTON — The Knights of Columbus Council 3999 from Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church recently awarded $4,000 in scholarships to eight local students attending colleges this fall. Each student was awarded a $500 scholarship.

According to Jack McWhinnie, a member of the chapter’s scholarship committee, the money for the scholarships comes from the chapter’s annual fall “Pig Out” dinner and auction. In addition to the scholarship, money raise from the event helps a variety of other local causes the chapter supports in the community. The chapter has been providing scholarships for more than 20 years.

The following students were awarded scholarships this year:

Leslye Arementa of Umatilla, attending Eastern Oregon University; Adrian Angel of Stanfield, attending Western Oregon University; Maria Klein of Hermiston; attending Wyoming Catholic college; Dakota Moss of Stanfield, attending Columbia Basin College; Adrian Perez of Hermiston, attending Blue Mountain Community College; Fatima Ortega of Umatilla, attending Eastern Oregon University; Luis Santoyo Jr. of Hermiston, attending Tabor College in Kansas; and Bianca Torres of Hermiston, attending Oregon Institute of Technology.

Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal order founded in 1882 to render financial aid to members and their families. Today there are more than. 1.8 million member in 14,000 councils worldwide providing educational, charitable, religious, social welfare work and more.

Heppner grad earns master’s degree

Tyler Boyer graduated in August with a three-year master’s degree in professional mental health counseling from Lewis & Clark College in Portland. Tyler is employed at Cascadia in Portland.

Tyler graduated from Heppner High School in 2005, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Linfield College.

Tyler is the son of John and Kelly Boyer of Lexington.

Wagenblast receives Ph.D

PULLMAN, Wash. — Becky Wagenblast graduated with her Doctorate of Philosophy in English, with an emphasis in modern American literature, at Washington State University’s Fall Commencement in Pullman on Dec. 12, 2015. Her dissertation, entitled “Gender and Agency in Tender Is the Night, Save Me the Waltz, and The Garden of Eden,” was successfully defended in July. Dr. Wagenblast is the daughter of Vicki and the late Steve Wagenblast of Lexington.
